Construction seasonal irrigation maps

I would like clarification on how the seasonal irrigation layers (e.g. tc-wintercereals_irrigation) are constructed.

Specifically, what is the base domain for the irrigation classification?

Is irrigation classified:

  1. Only for pixels identified as winter cereals in the corresponding crop type map?

  2. For all crops detected during the seasonal time window (i.e. season-specific, not crop-specific)?

  3. Or based on the annual temporary cropland (tc-annual) mask?

In other words, is the seasonal irrigation map crop-specific, season-specific, or derived from the annual cropland domain?

Thank you for the clarification.

Dear Nadine,

Thank you for your interest in our seasonal irrigation product.

All details related to these products have been published in the following paper, so you should be able to find an answer to all your questions here –> ESSD - WorldCereal: a dynamic open-source system for global-scale, seasonal, and reproducible crop and irrigation mapping

In short, the irrigation product is season-specific, not crop specific!

Each pixel identified as temporary crops will be classified as either irrigated or rainfed in each of the individual growing seasons we considered (tc-wintercereals, tc-maize-main and tc-maize-second).

Hope this helps!

Dear Jeroen
Thanks for your explanation! That helped a lot.
